At Welbeck, we love to read! Each class has an exciting reading corner. Where possible, these are linked to the class topic.
Our reading corners promote a love of reading. They encourage children to use books to research key questions on display and to explore the features of different genres of books. Key vocabulary linked to the focus of the reading corner is also displayed, so children can see and say these words confidently and understand their meanings. This also helps children in their English lessons with their creative writing.
In every classroom, we also display how many times the children have read each week. The children’s target is to read at least four times a week. If they achieve this, they receive a class reward. Children also work towards a half termly whole school treat if they achieve at least four signatures each week.
Reading Corner Examples
Most of our reading corners are topic themed and they all include key questions and vocabulary to engage the children.
We also have a Reading Room at lunchtime every day, where the children can access a range of fantastic, exciting new books.
Every child is aiming to read at home at least four times each week for an individual reward and whole school award.
Keep up the superb reading everyone!
