At Welbeck we follow the ‘Letters & Sounds’ phonics programme. Teaching begins within the first two weeks of children starting reception and continues to the end of KS1. Children in reception and KS1 have a school reading book that closely matches their reading ability, ensuring their book is fully decodable and allowing them to practise what they have been learning in phonics lessons. We use the ‘Collins BIG CAT Phonics’ for Letters and Sounds books. We aim for all children to be fluent readers by the end of KS1 and progress onto early reader books.
At Welbeck, we love to read! Each class has an exciting reading corner. Where possible, these are linked to the class topic.
Our reading corners promote a love of reading. They encourage children to use books to research key questions on display and to explore the features of different genres of books. Key vocabulary linked to the focus of the reading corner is also displayed, so children can see and say these words confidently and understand their meanings. This also helps children in their English lessons with their creative writing.
In every classroom, we also display how many times the children have read each week. The children’s target is to read at least four times a week. If they achieve this, they receive a class reward. Children also work towards a half termly whole school treat if they achieve at least four signatures each week.

Autumn Term Reading Corners
To welcome our children back, all of the reading corners have been updated. Most of them are topic themed and they all include key questions and vocabulary to engage the children.
We also have a Reading Room at lunchtime every day, where the children can access a range of fantastic, exciting new books.
Every child is aiming to read at home at least four times each week for a reward.
